The administration offices of the City of Maquoketa are located in City Hall at 201 East Pleasant Street, Maquoketa, IA 52060.
Offices are open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Pet Licenses
Every owner of a dog or cat over six (6) months old shall procure a license from the City of Maquoketa City Hall on or before the first day of November each year, or within thirty (30) days of the animal being brought into the City, or when the animal has reached six (6) months of age. The license application is not available online, the application must be filled out at City Hall. To obtain a license, please bring in a copy of your pet's rabies vaccination records and a full body picture of your animal which we will keep. License fees are $5.00 for owners 54 years of age or younger and $1.00 for owners 55 years of age or older. For those who are delinquent in getting a license, late fees will apply. Peddlers Permit
Any person engaging in peddling, soliciting or in the business of a transient merchant in this City must obtain a license from the City. License fees are $75 and licenses take at least two days to process. For a copy of the ordinance and the application, please refer to our download center in the left hand menu.
Home Occupation Permits
Any person wishing to operate a Home Occupation must make application for a Home Occupation Permit. For a copy of the ordinance and the application, please refer to our download center in the left hand menu.
Solid Waste Hauler Permits
No person shall engage in the business of collecting, transporting, processing or disposing of solid waste or recyclable materials other than his/her own within the City without first obtaining from the City an annual license. Tree Trimmer Permits
It shall be unlawful for any person or firm to engage in the business or occupation of pruning, treating, or removing trees within the City without first applying for and procuring a license. For a copy of the ordinance and the application, please refer to our download center in the left hand menu.
Housemovers Permit
It shall be unlawful for any person to engage in any activity regulated by this Chapter without obtaining a valid permit in advance in accordance with the procedures of Title III, Chapter 10A. Building Permit
It shall be unlawful to commence or to proceed with the erection, construction, reconstruction, conversion, alteration, enlargement, extension, raising or moving of any building or structure, fences or parking lots, or any portion thereof, without first having applied in writing to the Building Official for a building permit to do so and a building permit has been granted therefor. To apply for a building permit, you must fill out a building permit application. This application is not available online because the application is a two-part form. You can either stop in to Maquoketa City Hall to pick up a building permit application or contact us and we can mail you a building permit application. Although the time it takes to get a building permit approved may vary, please allow at least one week for the approval process. Also, please keep in mind that a building permit must be approved before any work can begin.
Variance Applications
Whenever a person cannot be granted a building permit under the current guidelines, he/she may apply for the ability to vary from the rules. A person can apply for a variance at City Hall. As a part of the application, the person must pay a fee and submit the names and addresses of property owners within 200 feet of his/her property. Those names and addresses can be obtained at the Auditor's office in the Jackson County Courthouse. A public hearing then must be set up before the Zoning Board of Adjustment and the neighboring property owners must be notified of the hearing by City Hall. The neighboring property owners may speak either for or against the proposed project. To apply for a variance, you must fill out a variance application. Please keep in mind that if a variance is required, the approval of the variance is required before a building permit will be issued and before any work may be again. Birch Drive brush site
The city owns and operates a site where Maquoketa citizens can drop off yard waste, grass clippings and tree trimmings. The site is located on Birch Drive. For a copy of the rules and regulations for this site, please refer to our download center in the left hand menu.
Yard Waste pick-up
To assist people with the removal of yard waste, the City operates a yard waste pick up program. Pick up is on a prepaid basis only and residents must purchase stickers from Maquoketa City Hall. Stickers are $3.00 each. Pick up will be on an appointment only basis. For more information on the program, please refer to our download center in the left hand menu.
Snow/Grass complaints
To inform the City about properties which have not shoveled their snow or mowed their grass, you should call the Maquoketa Police Department at 563-652-2468. Please keep in mind that residents have 24 hours from the end of a snowfall to shovel and that in most areas all grasses, weeds, vines and brush shall be cut or destroyed when said growth exceeds six inches (6") in height. Automatic Utility Payments
The City of Maquoketa offers its utility customers the convenience of automatic payments. If a customer chooses to take advantage of automatic payments, they must fill out an authorization form and provide a copy of a voided check. Automatic payments are made on the 20th of each month unless the 20th is on a weekend or a holiday, then the payments are made on the next business day. Customers will continue to receive their monthly bill in the mail.
Adopt-A-Street Permit
Any person or group who would like to adopt a section of street in the city limits and maintain the area by picking up litter at least four times annually is encouraged to adopt-a-street. Liquor License or Beer Permit
Any business interested in applying for a liquor license or a beer permit must contact Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division at 515-281-7430.
