GREAT Program
Gang Resistance Education and Training or G.R.E.A.T. is a program that was started in 1991 by a joint team of educators and law enforcement in Phoenix, Arizona. G.R.E.A.T. is a school-based, law enforcement officer instructed in classroom curriculum. Its primary goal is prevention, coupled with a community wide approach to combat the risk factors involved in youth violence, delinquency, and criminal activity. The program offers positive methods to deal with the everyday frustrations, temptations and problems that arise or that the students may encounter. Techniques to avoid youth violence, gang membership, delinquency, tobacco, drugs, alcohol and bullying are all offered during this 13 lesson program. Positive decision making and life skills are promoted by the use of role-playing exercises, peer discussion groups, and classroom discussion. These exercises allow the students to interact with one another, the school teacher and the law enforcement officer to better develop and practice their own life skills. In all, G.R.E.A.T. promotes a positive sense of self-worth, a feeling of community involvement and community responsibility, as well as providing kids with the tools they need to be a positive influence instead of a negative influence.
