Police Department

Bike Patrol

The Maquoketa Police Department Bicycle Patrol Unit was started the summer of 1998 with a bike donated by Mike's Bikes here in Maquoketa. The Chief of Police authorized four officers to attend an intensive 40 hour training course through the East Moline (Illinois) training center. The training consists of classroom presentations and hands-on field exercises.

The use of police mountain bikes is mainly used for special functions and park areas. However, when manpower is up, we patrol on them regularly. The bikes are silent enough to sneak up on criminal activity and give us the ability to reach areas unreachable by a patrol car. The bikes also make us much more approachable to the public than a police car. It removes the barrier between the public and the officer.

The police bikes we patrol on are generally 21 speed mountain bikes that are specifically designed for police use. There are several different brand names of bikes that are used for police work, however the Maquoketa Police Department uses Trek and Fuji mountain bikes.
