Nature spoils Maquoketa, from its winding rivers to picturesque terrain, abundant with wildlife. As a result, recreational activities abound in Maquoketa and the surrounding area.

A premier attraction in the area is scenic Maquoketa Caves State Park, featuring a natural bridge, six miles of hiking trails, a balancing rock and 13 caves, more than any other park in Iowa.

Maquoketa is the hub of a surprising array of recreational opportunities: caves, rivers, and parks, canoeing, camping and hunting, biking and golfing.

Surrounding Maquoketa is "simply beautiful" Jackson County. Our guests use Maquoketa as a base to explore over 30 county parks, preserves, and canoe accesses; four major campgrounds; the Mississippi and Maquoketa Rivers; over sixty National Register sites; the ethnic Luxembourg village of St. Donatus; and many historic and scenic sites of Bellevue.

Maquoketa has two beautiful nine hole golf courses at the Maquoketa Country Club and the Prairie Creek Golf Course & Driving Range. Even if you're not an accomplished golfer the picturesque landscape makes even a tough round easier to bear.

The Maquoketa River allows for a diverse array of water recreation, including fishing, canoeing and boating. Breathtaking in its beauty, the Maquoketa River is home to a variety of wildlife and is surrounded by a colorful assortment of wildflowers.

For a more on the edge of your seat entertainment, Maquoketa is also known for its dirt track racing, featuring many racing divisions. The races are held on Saturday nights, April through September, weather permitting. If racing does not get your heart pumping, then try a lap around the indoor track at Jackson County's new YMCA. The new YMCA has an indoor pool, track, variety of exercise equipment and aerobic activities to get your blood flowing.

Enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbuster under a blanket of stars at the 61 Drive-In Theatre. Maquoketa boasts one of the few remaining Drive-In Theaters. What a way to spend a summer evening.

Ohnward Fine Arts Center hosts many live plays and musical performances guaranteed to make your stomach ache from laughter or sooth your soul with delight.
